Hull’s indie scene has never lacked swagger, but on Poet, Pablo Carrizo reveals an entirely different side to his songwriting — one built on reflection, vulnerability and atmosphere rather than terrace-ready singalongs. And the result? It might just be his most compelling release yet.
Having already racked up over 72k Spotify streams, shared stages with The Lottery Winners, The Clause and The Lilacs, and turned debut single Summerhouse into an unofficial Hull City A.F.C. anthem, Pablo could easily have doubled down on the big indie hooks that first put his name on the map. Instead, Poet takes a left turn, and it’s all the stronger for it.
Channeling a rich folk-inspired sound, the track immediately feels more intimate. Acoustic textures shimmer underneath warm instrumentation, while Pablo’s vocals carry a rawness and honesty that gives the song genuine emotional weight. There’s still a melodic accessibility running through it, but this time the focus shifts towards storytelling, atmosphere and lyrical depth.
What makes Poet stand out is the maturity in the songwriting. The track unfolds patiently, never rushing towards an obvious payoff, instead allowing every lyric and subtle instrumental flourish to breathe. There’s a timeless quality to it too, equally powerful through headphones in the dead of night as it would be in a packed-out venue.
Crucially, this doesn’t feel like an artist abandoning his roots. The same knack for memorable melodies and emotional connection that made Summerhouse resonate with thousands is still here, it’s simply been reframed through a more reflective and cinematic lens.
For an emerging artist, changing direction this early can be risky. But Poet sounds like the work of somebody refusing to stand still creatively. It’s bold, sincere and beautifully understated, the sound of a songwriter growing into his craft in real time.
If Pablo Carrizo’s earlier releases announced him as one of Hull’s most exciting emerging talents, Poet feels like the moment he truly steps into a different league altogether. Bold enough to reinvent his sound, yet emotionally grounded enough to make every lyric hit home, this is the kind of track that stops you in your tracks and demands your attention. Forget hype, Poet sounds like the arrival of an artist discovering exactly who he wants to be, and doing it with a confidence far beyond his years.
Poet is released on Friday 22nd May
