Afflecks Palace – Can You Hear Me?

Few bands could turn a brush with death into something quite so uplifting. Yet that is precisely what Manchester’s Afflecks Palace have achieved with “Can You Hear Me?”, a deeply personal, emotionally charged release that transforms one of life’s most frightening experiences into an exhilarating celebration of being alive.

Arriving as the second single from their forthcoming third album, Sunshine Death, the track offers another fascinating insight into the mindset of frontman J. Fender following his near-fatal heart attack aboard a transatlantic flight. Where previous single “Bad Behaviour” confronted the psychological aftermath with a whirlwind of urgency and defiance, “Can You Hear Me?” takes a more reflective approach, delivering some of the band’s most revealing songwriting against a beautifully constructed, infectious soundscape.

Opening with a dreamy wash of atmospheric, almost celestial synths, the track immediately establishes a sense of calm before a pulsating bassline and crisp, punchy percussion introduce an irresistible rhythmic groove. There is a wonderful fluidity to the instrumentation, with shimmering guitar textures and delicate melodic flourishes gradually weaving themselves into the arrangement. The bassline is particularly impressive, providing a warm, infectious undercurrent that gives the song its unmistakable forward momentum.

As the track develops, the soundscape becomes increasingly expansive. The guitars bring a bright, jangling quality, while the atmospheric layers lend the composition an almost psychedelic warmth. It’s a compelling combination of the band’s familiar Madchester-inspired rhythms and something altogether more sophisticated and emotionally resonant. The production allows each instrument room to breathe, creating an arrangement that feels rich and immersive without becoming overcrowded.

Fender’s vocal delivery provides an equally important dimension. The verses carry a conversational intimacy, his understated, expressive delivery drawing the listener into the story before the chorus opens into something considerably more euphoric. The repeated cries of “Can You Hear Me?” are accompanied by swelling instrumentation and layered vocal harmonies, creating an infectious, soaring refrain that feels tailor-made for a live audience.

Yet beneath those uplifting melodies lies a profoundly personal account of confronting mortality.

Fender recounts the terrifying experience of his medical emergency, referencing being 40,000 feet in the air, the arrival of a doctor and the overwhelming uncertainty of whether he would survive. There is nothing abstract about these details. They are direct, unsettling and delivered with the perspective of somebody who understands just how quickly life can change.

The chorus provides the song’s emotional centrepiece, with the striking declaration, “Facing death but I’m dying for life.” It’s an extraordinarily powerful sentiment, capturing the desperate determination to survive while simultaneously acknowledging just how close everything came to ending. Against the song’s uplifting instrumentation, those words carry even greater significance.

Perhaps the most intriguing moment arrives during the spoken-word passage, where the narrative shifts into a vivid, cinematic metaphor. A burning car hurtles towards a cliff edge, its passenger blindfolded and unaware that nobody is behind the wheel. As the moment of impact approaches, instinct takes over and the passenger escapes, arriving at the realisation that life must be lived rather than surrendered.

It’s a striking piece of storytelling that adds another dimension to the composition. The passage momentarily redirects attention towards Fender’s words before the return of that glorious, melody-driven chorus, which now feels even more cathartic. What initially sounded like a plea for reassurance becomes something closer to a declaration of survival.

That contrast between light and darkness is ultimately what makes “Can You Hear Me?” so effective. Musically, its buoyant rhythms, shimmering guitars and soaring chorus radiate optimism. Lyrically, it confronts fear, vulnerability and the fragility of human existence. Neither element diminishes the other; instead, they combine to make the song more emotionally affecting.

Taken alongside “Bad Behaviour”, the single also provides an exciting indication of what awaits on Sunshine Death. Both tracks are connected by intensely personal experiences, yet their musical approaches are markedly different. One is raw, confrontational and relentlessly energetic; the other is more melodic, atmospheric and reflective. Together, they suggest an album unafraid to confront difficult emotions while embracing the sheer joy of making music.

“Can You Hear Me?” is Afflecks Palace at their most vulnerable, yet also among their most uplifting. An infectious, beautifully layered indie anthem that turns a terrifying encounter with mortality into something life-affirming. This is more than simply another excellent single; it’s the sound of a songwriter rediscovering just how precious life really is.

Can You Hear Me? Is released on Monday 19th October.

Sunshine Death is scheduled for release on 15 January 2027 via Spirit of Spike Island.
