Matilda Shakes aren’t waiting for permission to become one of Sheffield’s next great guitar bands. On new single Transmission, the four-piece deliver a towering statement of intent, a darly magentic and swaggering high-voltage indie rock anthem, that is bold, tightly constructed and built to travel from grassroots venues to big arenas.
Recorded at Magic Garden Studios alongside Gavin Monaghan and Liam Radburn, Transmission arrives following a remarkable period of momentum for the band. A packed appearance on The Leadmill Stage at Tramlines Festival, a performance during the Silverstone F1 weekend, support from BBC Introducing and placements across Spotify’s editorial and major sporting playlists have all helped propel Matilda Shakes towards a potentially defining breakthrough.
Rather than allowing those achievements to become the story, Transmission gives Matilda Shakes another compelling reason to believe that their ascent is only just beginning.
Opening with a brief moment of restraint, ‘Transmission’ soon erupts into life as muscular guitars, pounding drums and a driving bassline lock together.
At the centre of the track is a hypnotic guitar riff that refuses to loosen its grip. Repetitive in the most effective sense, it coils itself around the song and creates an almost trance-like pull, drawing the listener deeper with every revolution. It provides ‘Transmission’ with both its identity and its underlying tension: a riff that feels immediate on first contact but grows increasingly addictive with every return.
Beneath it, the drums drive the track forward with relentless purpose. There is no wasted movement within the rhythm section; every beat adds urgency, giving the song a muscular momentum without allowing it to become cumbersome. The drums and guitar work in perfect opposition – one constantly pushing ahead while the other keeps the listener locked within its orbit.
There is plenty of Sheffield swagger running through the recording, but Matilda Shakes channel that heritage into something urgent and unmistakably their own.
That chorus is where the track truly opens up. The falsetto vocal is an inspired counterweight to the force of the instrumentation, lifting the song above the weight of its driving rhythm and giving the hook a striking change of colour. Where the verses feel tightly wound and hypnotic, the higher vocal register brings space, melody and a flash of vulnerability.
Crucially, the falsetto never dilutes the song’s power. Instead, it sharpens the contrast at its heart. At around the halfway point, Transmission finds another gear. The pace momentarily drops, before exploding back into life into a ferocious final stretch. It is here that the track’s true scale becomes apparent: guitars flare, drums thunder and soaring vocals combine into a towering and powerful conclusion.
Crucially, none of that power feels forced. Beneath its sizeable production and arena-ready ambition lies a band playing with real chemistry. Transmission captures the immediacy of five musicians pushing in the same direction, turning pressure into adrenaline and momentum into something explosive.
This is a band no longer content with simply knocking on the door. Transmission kicks it from its hinges. Explosive, unapologetic and built to shake venues to their foundations, it captures Matilda Shakes at their most commanding yet.
