Salford four-piece The Fairway have spent the past year quietly laying the foundations for something bigger. With more than 20,000 Spotify streams amassed across four singles and their self-titled debut EP, released in May, the band now return with the assured and anthemic ‘Caught in the Crossfire’.
Opening with an atmospheric guitar line, the track initially holds its power in reserve. There is a simmering tension to those early moments, with the vocal cutting through the mix before the rhythm section begins to tighten its grip. The arrangement gradually gathers momentum, transforming that restrained introduction into a surging piece of emotionally charged indie rock.
The guitars are the driving force throughout. Alternating between shimmering melodies and heavier, more urgent bursts, they give the song a widescreen quality without burying its underlying vulnerability. Bass and drums provide a muscular backbone, pushing ‘Caught in the Crossfire’ forward as the pressure steadily mounts.
At its centre is a chorus built for packed-out venues. Expansive, immediate and charged with emotion, it possesses the kind of simple melodic pull that invites a crowd to take ownership of it. Each return hits with greater force, while the impassioned vocal performance captures the frustration and confusion of becoming trapped in the fallout of a fractured relationship.
Crucially, The Fairway resist rushing towards their biggest moment. At just over four minutes, the track is given room to breathe, allowing its dynamics to do much of the storytelling. The quieter passages create tension before ringing guitars and crashing percussion restore its full weight, culminating in a rousing final stretch that reveals a band increasingly comfortable with writing on a larger scale.
That growing ambition arrives at an important point for the Salford quartet. On August 8th, The Fairway will play their biggest headline show so far at Gullivers in Manchester, joined by Jace Campbell and Kian Coggins. They are also set to appear on the Heard It Here First Stage at Venture Fest, held at Woodhouses Cricket Club next door to Burnley Football Club, alongside a line-up featuring Rowetta, Andrew Cushin and Northside.
With its carefully controlled build, soaring guitars and a chorus destined to reverberate around packed venues, ‘Caught in the Crossfire’ captures The Fairway stepping confidently into their next chapter. If this is the sound of a band finding another gear, the future is very exciting indeed.
