Capes are a 3-piece indie band hailing from Derby. Having met on the local gig circuit, whilst playing in previous bands and sharing a mutual love for Oasis, Stereophonics, Arctic Monkeys and many others, Daniel Parkin (Lead singer/guitarist) Liam Bater (drummer and backing vocalist) and Jordy Baines (bass and backing vocalist) decided to get together for a jam and, after relentless rehearsing, they stepped out onto their local gig circuit and quickly established themselves as a live favourite, which has included appearances at Y Not, Tramlines Fringe and Big Shakeout.
Since those early beginnings, Capes have released 3 singles, 4AM, Wish I Could Fly and Gimme The Night, each single receiving great feedback and increasing their fan base in the process.
Their debut EP, Know Your Onions, is released on Monday 10th July and features 4 unreleased tracks, which we’ve reviewed track by track below.
Slow Down starts off with a whirl of feedback before exploding into the song with a catchy hook and pounding drums. The vocal delivery is really strong and I like the backing vocals in the verses. It’s a mid-tempo stomper of track, which has a brilliant change of pace around the 2min 30 second mark, which sees the lead guitar delivering a great finger pattern playing with hi -hats and snare drum taking centre stage, before the pace builds back up and explodes into the chorus before a final tempo change in the outro.
Love Ain’t A Loaded Gun is next and opens with a chiming guitars and vocal. The bass and drums crash into the song as the song enters the chorus and is a great display of musicianship and shows that Capes have put a lot of thought into the sound of each song. The track has a great melody to it and the chorus is really anthemtic and after the second chorus, breaks out into blistering guitar solo, that has a distinct Britpop feel about. My personal favourite on the EP.
I’ll Only Hurt You If You Let Me is filled with huge stadium ready guitar riffs, big vocals and anthemtic lyrics, that are vulnerable and is backed with pounding drums and thumping bass lines.
Mad Women packs a real punch and is the EPs most rockiest track. It’s full of hard hitting guitar riffs, intense drumming and punchy bass lines and is one that will get you moving. It grabs your attention immediately and the songs intro has a real swagger about it. Capes have cranked the volume up to 11 and thrown everything into this song. The chorus is bursting with energy and the harmonies are a real highlight. It’s a great way to end the EP and leaves a lasting impression.
Know Your Onions is a great collection of songs, it’s open honest rocknroll that packs a punch and is a mightly impressive debut EP and in my view is one that you cannot ignore.
Know Your Onions is out now on all streaming platforms.
