The Skinner Brothers brought their rocknroll LONEDON tour to Southend and it went down a storm for a passionate and up for it crowd.
Creating a party atmosphere, the band came onto the stage with the PA system playing Sweet Caroline, before launching into Culture Non-Stop, which presented Zak with the immediate opportunity of getting right into the mix of the crowd and creating the nights first mosh pit, where he would be backed up throughout by photographer Connor Hill, who was on a one man crusade to get the audience bouncing and even went off on his own stage dive halfway through the set.
Rattling off tunes from last years critically and fan acclaimed Soul Boy II album, including Mountain High, Iconic and Away Days (which prompted a huge sing along), The Skinner Brothers delivered a set full of energy, passion and knowing exactly when to slow the pace down (as show here on LONEDON) or pick it back up again. As they’ve shown throughout this summers festival season, The Skinner Brothers are ready to move on from this intimate “club” style gigs and its now only a matter of time before they headline venues like Brixton Academy and go on to be absolutely massive.
Support on the night came from local bands (and friends of ThisIsThe Music) San Quentin and The Lucettas.
The Lucettas started off the night bringing their mix of upbeat catchy melodies and harmonies, with a new energetic rockier sound that really showcases their craftsmanship as musicians. The band played all 3 of their single releases to date as well as a couple of unreleased tracks, which are all set to feature on the bands debut album. Highlights of their storming set including recent single Cyracos which sounded like an absolute monster live, as well as In Everything, where the band played an extended outro, which was driven by drummer Sam’s pounding drums and had the audience totally captivated.
This set was followed by San Quentin, a band that we have been backing from the very beginning. They played to an expected crowd, who in the words of frontman Owen Eves “gave 100%”. The tunes that the 5- piece have released to date immediately resonate thanks to their catchy guitar riffs, rumbling bass lines and thunderous drumming. These were sung back by the crowd and you could see the knowing looks amongst the band that the gig was special. They also showcased a couple of new songs Underdog and their next single You Got Some Nerve both of which were enthusiastically received by the crowd and a sign that San Quentin have got some huge tunes waiting to be released and I can’t wait to hear them.
This was a great gig, with each band on top form and giving a great insight into what they are all about. I have high hopes for each band and truly believe that in the years to come, people will be saying that this was an “I was there” moment.
