Same Streets, Different Ghosts captures Shines exactly where they want to be right now — moving forward with clarity, confidence and intent. Written, recorded and finished in a short, focused burst, the track carries an immediacy that feels instinctive rather than overworked, driven by feel instead of formula.
Formed in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire in 2023, Shines are a band driven by movement rather than mythology. Made up of Richie Dutton (vocals/songwriting), Ethan Taylor (guitar), Chris Day (drums) and Danny Thomas (bass), they write their songs from scratch in the room, guided by melody and instinct. Closely involved in every stage — from recording to artwork and visuals — their approach is direct, disciplined and rooted in feel.
Built around a strong melodic core, the song moves with purpose from the outset. The guitars push rather than drift, adding momentum without overwhelming the track, while the rhythm section keeps everything locked and forward-facing. There’s a discipline to the arrangement — nothing wasted, nothing forced — allowing the song’s natural energy to take centre stage.
Vocally, Richie Dutton’s delivery sits firmly within the track rather than floating above it, reinforcing the song’s grounded, lived-in feel. Lyrically, Same Streets, Different Ghosts reflects on familiarity and change — the strange tension of places that stay the same while people evolve. Crucially, it leaves space for the listener, offering emotion without over-explanation.
That sense of instinct-led confidence hasn’t gone unnoticed. The track has already received early backing from John Kennedy, who played it twice in the same week on Radio X’s X-Posure and selected it as one of his “Hot Ones” — a telling nod to the band’s growing momentum.
That forward momentum has been matched off-record too, with Shines signing to Echo Bass Records in 2025 — an independent label quietly assembling one of the UK’s most impressive emerging indie rosters.
It’s a natural fit. Like the label itself, Shines prioritise clarity, craft and forward movement over overstatement — trusting strong songwriting and instinct-led decisions to do the heavy lifting. The partnership feels less like a launchpad and more like an alignment, giving the band space to move quickly, stay hands-on and remain fully in control of their creative direction
Same Streets, Different Ghosts sees Shines drawing a line under who they were and stepping forward with absolute intent. Every decision feels deliberate, every note serves the song, and every second reinforces a band that knows exactly what they’re doing.
Forget origin stories and overblown mythology — Shines are about momentum, clarity and forward motion. With Radio X backing already locked in and a sound that feels direct, melodic and sharply in focus, this is a band operating in the present tense, not chasing the past or second-guessing the future.
This track doesn’t ask for your attention — it earns it. Shines aren’t circling the conversation anymore. They’re walking straight into it, heads up, shoulders squared, and leaving no doubt that they belong there.
Statement made. Momentum claimed. Shines are moving — and you’d be wise to move with them.
Same Streets Different Ghosts is released on Friday 30th January and can be pre-saved here.
