Welsh 4-piece The Malakites return with their first single in 12 months with a debut EP to follow later in the year,
The Welsh 4-piece formed in 2019 and have gone from strength to strength, wowing audiences at major UK festivals (IOW; Y Not Festival), going out on several well received headline tours and being added to This Feelings Big In 2024 recommendations. Back with a new drummer in Woody Gray, Jacob Webber (vocals and Rhythm Guitar) (Drums) Thibault Sergrott (Teabag) (Lead Guitar and backing vocals) Daniel Rizzo (bass), are aiming to build upon their momentum and remain at the forefront as one of Wales most exciting emerging indie bands.
“Lucy” is a dynamic ballad that showcases The Malakites’ knack for blending raw energy with melodic sensibility. The song is built around a haunting piano riff, which kicks off the song, and is expertly intertwined with a melodic guitar riff, immediately setting a vibrant tone that’s both gritty and infectious. The rhythm section drives the track forward with tight, pulsing bass lines and crisp drumming that never lets the momentum dip.
Vocally, the delivery is passionate and slightly rough around the edges, which adds a sense of authenticity to the storytelling. Lyrically, “Lucy” seems to explore themes of longing and disillusionment, painting a vivid picture of a character who’s both magnetic and elusive.
The chorus is undeniably anthemic, the kind that lingers after just one listen, begging for a sing-along with its infectious melody. The soaring guitar hooks shimmer with charm, sending shivers down your spine and really highlights the quality of musicianship on display.
What stands out most is the production—a balanced mix that allows each instrument to shine without overpowering the vocals. The bridge offers a slight shift, pulling back just enough to create tension before launching back into the final chorus with renewed intensity.
Overall, “Lucy” feels like a confident step forward for The Malakites and showcases their ability to craft memorable indie rock anthems. If this track is anything to go by, The Malakites are definitely a band to keep an eye on in 2025.
