London 5-piece, Maze are back with a fantastic EP, featuring 4 tracks including two brand new songs.

The band who consist of Gary Davis on vocals Paul Hancock and Paul Bassom on guitars, Ben Rutherford on bass, and Martin Gamby on drums formed in 2021 and draw influence from 90s Britpop. They’ve quickly gained a cult following and a reputation for killer live sets, thanks to being humble and appreciative of the support they’ve received. Stepping up to headline the ThisIsTheMusic showcase at the Water Rats on 16th November, at the last moment, shows that nothing phases the London band and will stand them in good stead ahead of their own headliner at the Water Rats next year, which is sold out a full 3 months in advance, is further testament to the bands growing popularity.

Here’s the ThisIsTheMusic track by track preview.

Passage Of Time is the type of ballad that all bands dream of writing. The instrumentals are brilliant, the vocals are crisp and the huge singalong chorus is one of the most anthemic of 2024. From the opening notes, the track establishes a reflective tone with shimmering guitars and a steady rhythm that reflects the passing of days and invites you to reflect on your journey in life.

I Don’t Really Mind is a real gem of a track, packed with relatable and emotive lyrics. The vocals are bursting with charm, tinged with the right amount of vulnerability to resonate, particularly in the lyric ‘I don’t really mind of your stars align’. The track is built around crisp guitar riffs and a laid back rhythm that, as the song develops, subtle instrumental layers emerge showcasing the bands growing artistry.

Deeper The Cut is a hauntingly poignant release and really wears its heart on its sleeve as it dives deep into the raw emotion of pain and healing, with intricate musical arrangements. The lyrics are unflinchingly honest, delving into the scars – both physically and emotionally- that shape us. The vocals capture the intense emotion of the song perfectly.

Life Is What You Make Of It really showcases the quality of musicianship with the band. It’s a song full of swagger and means business from the opening guitar riff to the final euphoric chorus. The driving drums give the song its energy, whilst Gary delivers his best vocal to date and his ever growing confidence is really evident on this song.

Life Is What You Make Of It is an EP full of hope and reflection of life and is a testament to Maze’s ability to craft relatable and emotional music. The soundscape feels intimate and expansive showcasing the bands growing confidence. With a sold out show at the Water Rats and the release of this EP, Maze have well and truly established themselves as one of the most sought after bands in London. It’s only a matter of time before the rest of the country latches on.
