Former frontman of The Shed Project, to embark on exciting solo project.
Since The Shed Project blasted onto the indie scene in 2018, the band amassed over 123,00 Spotify streams across two incredible albums (The Curious Mind Of A Common Man and Our Fear Is Their Power), plenty of sold out gigs and a loyal fanbase built up on Twitter, thanks to the brilliant music, but also Roy Fletcher’s honesty in his lyrics and today’s world. When The Shed Project announced their decision to take a hiatus, earlier in this year, it was tinged with disappointment, but also an acknowledgement of the fine band that they are.
Fast forward several months and Roy announced, to much fanfare, his solo venture, Yon Mon (which for those of us who don’t live in the north, means what’s that man over there up to?), with the promise of plenty of music (an albums worth of material has already been demoed) and potential live shows.
The first offering is the uplifting and high-octane anthem, Shine On. Recorded at The Ivy Studio Bolton, by Danny Hayes (The Jade Assembly), Shine On is full of euphoric guitar hooks, melodic bass lines and driving drums, blending indie rock, pop, and dance elements seamlessly.
From the very first note, the euphoric guitar hooks set the tone: a bright and melodic sound that draws influence from the Madchester scene and sits alongside a tight rhythm section of driving drums and a melodic bass line, providing plenty of groove and setting the track off at a fast pace, which in essence is a real statement of intent.
The guitar hooks are irresistible, immediately grabbing your attention with their infectious energy. There’s a certain nostalgia to the sound, evoking the golden era of Britpop, yet it remains fresh and vibrant.
Roy’s distinctive and melodic vocal has never sounded as good and has an underlying confidence and swagger to it, delivering the lyrics with a sincerity that resonates deeply.
Lyrically this track, taps into themes of connection and love, be it with a parter or a friend. The chorus is anthemic and is waiting for you to sing-along to, making it an instant earworm: “Shine On my crazy friend, our love will never end” and really showcases Roy’s lyrically prowess.
Shine On showcases Roy’s skill of creating music that is both relatable and sonically engaging. It’s a track that resonates on multiple levels that’s packed full of charm, charisma, anthemic and highly infectious lyrics. As you’d expect from a Roy Fletcher record it’s confident and a bold statement of intent. It’s one of the most impressive debut singles of the year and based on this evidence Yon Man is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Shine On is released on Friday 27th September and is available to pre-save on Spotify and ITunes here.
