Dundee funk punk quartet, Jutebox have released their debut EP and it’s one of the best EPs you’ll hear all year.

Forming in 2023 Jutebox consist of Dan Richardson (Keys/Vocals); Nairn Thomson (Guitar/Vocals); Dylan Chalmers (Bass) Thomas Hope (Drums) and Rosie Handley (Saxophone) and have worked to build a band based on comradery and togetherness, which has resulted in a loyal and ever growing fan base witnessing live shows at some of Scotland’s prestigious venues: King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut; Church Dundee; and Ice Factory Perth to name a few. Now the five piece are looking to move further afield and on the evidence of this EP that ambition will be realised sooner rather than later.

The debut EP was released at the start of August and it’s a refreshing dive into a rich soundscape, intertwining indie rock/pop with soul and jazz.

Opening up with the energetic, instrumental Eoi! you get a great opportunity to listen in awe at the class musician that exists within the band.

From that moment on, you’re greeted with smooth, soulful vocals that glide effortlessly over intricate beats, creating a warm, enveloping atmosphere. The production is polished yet organic, allowing each track to breathe and evolve naturally. Lyrically, Jutebox explores themes of self-care, emotional healing, and resilience, making the album feel like a personal journey of introspection.

Each song is distinct, yet they all tie together to create a cohesive narrative that resonates deeply. The blend of R&B, jazz, and subtle electronic influences is expertly balanced, ensuring the album remains engaging from start to finish. Tracks like Eoi!, 24/7 and Adore stand out, showcasing Jutebox’s ability to craft hooks that linger long after the song has ended and upbeat feel good songs.

There’s a hint of The Bees mixed with The Zutons (first album) across the record and it’s a joyous listen across the entirety of the EP.

One of the strengths of Soul Maintenance is its ability to maintain a cohesive sound while offering plenty of variety to keep the listener engaged and guessing at what’s coming next. Each track flows seamlessly into the next, making it an EP that’s easy to listen to from start to finish.

Soul Maintenance is a strong release from Jutebox. It’s an EP that feels like a comforting embrace—something you can return to again and again. whenever you need a moment of reflection or simply want to enjoy some quality soul music.
