Based in Derby, The Blooms are an exciting indie band emerging from Derby. The 4-piece formed in early 2023 and consist of Charlie Royle (Frontman); Shay Brady; (Bass) Jaydn Ryalls (Drums) and Stanley Armes (Guitar).
The Blooms incorporate catchy riffs and heavy basslines reminiscent of the 90s britpop and 2000/10s indie scene, with a modern touch to bring a proper new indie feel. Writing their lyrics about common issues the youth of today tend to face, they aim to relate with them and form a sense of community with all who listen.
They released two singles in 2023. The debut Pikehall (which featured in the ThisIsTheMusic Top 40 singles of 2023) and Devil In Disguise which to date have a combined total of 8,858 Spotify streams. They have combined relentless gigging in Derby, with plenty of rehearsing and writing with the ambition of 2024 being a big year.
Starting off with a strummed guitar patten on the electric guitar, the song bursts into life with a sweeping guitar hook, sumptuous drum beat and a solid bass line that provides added bite.
The song is quite dark and takes on a more serious tone than the bands previous releases. It’s the bands most personal song yet, (whilst still remaining relatable) as lyrically it explores the feelings you have after losing someone you were once close with and how sometimes you reminisce about the good times, whilst realising things have changed for the better.
The emotion in frontman Charlie’s vocal is evident throughout the track, but is really emphasised in the chorus and is backed superbly by the haunting ooohs, adding tension and angst to the lyrical content of the song.
The song has a real maturity beyond their years, which makes this song so appealing and provides them with a unique quality and a real freshness to their sound, whilst providing a real unbeatable energy.
On Entwined, The Blooms have managed to maintain their ability of producing memorable songs. I’ve been a big fan since hearing their debut single and they continue to impress. With more releases on the way, 2024 is shaping up to a big year for the Derby 4-piece: believe the hype as The Blooms have got all the ingredients to get to the top!
