West Lothian’s The Azurescenes return with their 4th single The Island, determined to capitalise on the moment of previous single You Better Get Used To It and playing at Glasgow’s McChuillis last week (1st September).
Formed in late 2020, West Lothian indie quartet The Azurescens (pronounced Ahh-zoo-ray- sins) are made up of guitarists Gary (Gaz) Anderson and Andy Tait, bassist Brian Gallacher and new drummer Steven Knox (Knoxy). Like many, the band had to wait until 2022 before they could play live and release music. In just three singles, the band have made a considerable impression, gaining fan and critical acclaim in the process.
The band take inspiration and influence from all of the rocknroll greats, including Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and Stone Roses and heavier influences including Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix, whilst putting their own stamp on to give us The Azurescenes sound.
The Island is an upbeat track filled with jangly guitar driven melodies and catchy chorus that shows a side to the band that we’ve not seen so far. The song opens with a catchy melodic riff right from the start and will have you hooked instantly and offers an air of excitement throughout.
The jangly guitars have a nod to the early 90s with a bit of new wave thrown into the mix and which combined together makes for a really exciting and fresh single.
Lyrically, The Island captures the frustration of being stuck in one place and trying to escape that feeling. It is a relatable concept that will resonate with listeners. The message is if that if you want change then you have to take responsibility to make that happen.
Having supported Stone Roses and Simply Red guitarist Aziz Ibriham at Bathgates’ Purple Orange in May, which frontman Gaz has described as being “mad for us” and that Aziz was a “top guy”, the future looks magic for The Azurescens!
The Island is released on Thursday 7th September and can be pre-saved here.
