Hertfordshire 5 piece, Maystones return with their first new music since their debut EP, “Maystones” (check out our review here) and it’s well worth the wait.
Having spent the past few months, writing, recording and relentlessly rehearsing new material, Maystones have been keeping a low profile, whilst honing their sound and musicianship, only emerging for a support slot with fellow Herts band Darlings and their first major UK festival when they played on the This Feeling stage at Isle of Wight. But now they are back with a bang and well and truly mean business.
High Society came out today (Friday 1st September) and you are immediately with a huge synthesiser intertwines with a drum beat before a chugging bass line and melodic guitar riff join in, giving the song an almighty sound and undeniable energy and drive.
The synthesiser drops out during the verses, before taking centre stage in-between each verse and the anthemic chorus.
I’m a big fan of frontman James Dowse’s vocal on this track, it’s packed full of emotion and yearning in its delivery, whilst having a rawness that makes you stand up and take notice.
The guitars pack a punch and complement the synthesisers brilliantly, with both being allowed the space to showcase the high-class musicianship on display within the band.
The chorus is thought provoking and anthemtic as James sings:
“It’s high time for anxiety, not a fine time for sobriety, gonna find time for propriety, it’s a high, high, high, society”
And yes I keep on returning to those synthesisers but they really stand out; Maystones have definitely moved their sound on and shown they are more than just another indie band.
High Society highlights the passion, drive and craftsmanship that exists within Maystones. They’ve delivered a top class single that stands out from the rest of the crowd and sees the band take things up a notch. It’s only a matter of time before Maystones are a name on everyone’s lips.
High Society is out now on all streaming and download platforms.
