Calum Baird is a rising Scottish folk star writing songs that tie in social, cultural and political ideas and themes in a folk music style. His influences include Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Dick Gaughan, Phoebe Bridgers and Phil Ochs amongst other.
To date Calum has released 1 album and 12 singles, including Beauty In The Worst Of Times which was released on Friday 30th June.
To support the release of the new single , Calum has put together a fantastic video which captures the feel of the song superbly and I’m delighted that it’s getting its worldwide premiere on ThisIsTheMusic today (Monday 3rd July 2023) and Calum’s You Tube channel: it’s a privilege to be involved in this huge milestone for Calum.
Beauty In The Worst Of Times, is rich in tone from the outset and sees Calum deliver a heartfelt and emotional vocal, performance with the lyricsl content making a stand against social issues such as depression as well as alienating thoughts and day to day experiences. The track expresses a deep awareness of the fact that the world is in a tumultuous period right now caused by war, poverty, rising far right politics and the climate crisis. However, the song does possess a message of hope, despite the dark times we are experiencing.
The song is stripped back to a crunching electric guitar, chiming glockenspiel, at the end of the verses and chorus, adds an additional dimension and vibrancy to the song and really comes to the fore in the song’s outro.
As with his previous releases, Beauty In The Worst of Times, showcases Calum’s undeniable talent in writing songs that capture a moment of time perfectly. It’s full of passion and offers hope in equal measure. It’s a song produced with pure skill and oozes class.
Beauty In The Worst Of Times is available to stream now.
