Rising indie stars, The Utopiates have released their debut album The Sun Also Rises (5th May) and its full of groove, shimmering guitars, soaring melodies and anthemic choruses.
Since releasing their first single 2021’s “Only Human”, The Utopiates have built up a loyal fan base, released 9 singles signed to V2 Records last year as well as selling out a string of headline shows, which have gone down an absolute storm.
The band wear their influences on their sleeves throughout the album. Be it the grooves of The Stone Roses or the swagger of Oasis, but they’ve added their own spin and take on it and made it their own.
Whilst the melodies in the tunes are uplifting, the band haven’t been afraid to voice their opinions on todays world, tackling subjects such as Paranoia, regret, depression and suicide feelings and experiences that a lot of people on their 20s and 30s have more than likely experienced at some point (‘Sick Love’, ‘It’s Coming For You’, ‘Best And Worst Days’). Those experiences are what make this album great. It’s able to relate to people of their generation, whilst also speaking to older generations.
“Many of the themes explored in the songs tap into a collective paranoia that grips society today. A post-brexit, nihilistic nightmare confined by the walls of social media and pre-cursed by AI and the inevitable climate crisis (‘Seekers’, ‘Devolution’, ‘Only Human’, ‘Simple Minds’). Did we ever stand a chance and what of the next generation?
Dan Popplewell
However that’s offset with the confidence and swaggering nature of the lyrics in Making History:
“One day you’ll see, yeah they’ll look at me, I’m not up here making tunes, I’m making history!
The Sun Also Rises is a fine debut album that will stand the test of the time. It had everything you want in an album, hope, fun, excitement and the belief that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. The album is full of groove and plenty of great musicianship that will propel The Utopiates to the very top of the indie tree.
The Sun Also Rises is available across all streaming and download platforms and is available on CD and Vinyl from the bands online store.
