Skylights: Rebellion

Indie rockers Skylights kick off 2023 in fine style with their fierce rocknroll anthem Rebellion, which is due for release on Friday 3rd March.

The York 4-piece: Rob Scarisbrick (Vocals), Turnbull (Guitar), Jonny Scarisbrick (Bass) and Myles Soley (Drums), had a superb 2022, signing to 42s Records releasing their debut album What You Are (number 34 in the charts) as well as selling out a string of shows including a huge homecoming gig at O2 Academy Leeds.

2023 has already seen the band play storming and sold out shows at the legendary King Tut’s in Glasgow and their adopted hometown of Aberdeen. Further shows at Leeds Millennium Square in July) supporting Cast and Shed Seven) and a headline show at Beckett S.U. in September beckon for a band whose passionate fan base continues to grow at a fast pace.

Rebellion is inspired by front man Scaz’s love of punk rock attitude and the Sex Pistols, the song conveys the thoughts and experiences of many cocksure young men during global and UK events since early 2020, without being overtly political.

“It’s a good old-fashioned punk/rock song with a bit of menace and bite, sticking two fingers up to the powers that be – in the nicest possible way. It came out of our experience, the frustration of feeling cut off from the world in the prime of your life back in 2020/21. It’s a reflection of what many people experienced every night in the UK and everywhere else country, with no socialising, no sport etc. Its not a political statement, but it is about frustration with the government at that time. A frustration that nearly bubbled over into rebellion. It’s not advocating rebellion it’s a reflection of how things felt at that moment in time. This song and our last single Outlaw both reflect the times we went through as mates in a band, and our amazing audience. Our next single, out in summer, reflects us moving on from that.”

Rebellion is explosive, fast paced and energetic anthem, fuelled by Turnball’s scintillating guitar riffs and Myles relentless drumming, it’s exactly what Skylights have become known for: epic and anthemic rocknroll.

Lyrically, Skylights have summed up the mood of the nation when we were in lockdown and it’s lyrics like these that support them in gaining new fans. They are writing from the heart and have a understanding of what we were feeling.

These are the days that we’ll never get back now, Police on the street cos the city’s in lockdown

Scaz’s vocal is fantastic yet again. It’s full of swagger and you can the influence that Rotten and Gallagher have had on him, although he is very quickly carving out a reputation in his own right.

Rebellion is an explosive and emotive rocknroll anthem full of the bands trademark swagger. It’s full of passion and energy that will blow fans away when they first hear it and has been specifically designed for pogoing.

With a festival slot at TRNSMT in July to come, it’s time for the people’s band to blow new audiences away and prove why their fan base believe they are the real deal.

Rebellion is released on Friday 3rd March and can be pre-saved here.

ThisIsTheMusic will be spinning Rebellion on Thursday 23rd February on Future Hits Radio.
