Marseille are undoubtedly one of the most exciting bands in Britain. The Derby 5-piece continue to go from strength to strength with each release drawing influence from 60s Merseybeat through to the 90s and beyond.
One of the many things that I like about Marseille is that they are doing things on their terms. They’ve released everything from rocknroll anthems such as the now deleted Shout It Out Loud (originally recorded when the band were a 4-piece) the Britpop influenced anthem Forget It All (which was used by Soccer AM) and the psychedelic 9 minute juggernaut in The Jungle.
Their new single Only Just Begun, sees the band take inspiration from the 60s Merseybeat sound which is combined with psychedelic moments.
They have stripped back the guitars on this song, and has enabled each band member to showcase their talents.
The track oozes glorious jangley guitars which is fast becoming the band’s trademark and the guitar hooks are addictive and really shine through, keeping you totally immersed in the song.
Lyrically it’s honest and to the point as portraying the meaning of the song so well that ensures you get a real insight and understanding of the situation.
“The song is written about a relationship that ended too soon which l’m sure is something a lot of people have experienced. Something full of potential just ends for a silly reason. This song just reflects that and tells a story of feelings and what happened over the course of that time”
Will Brown
The chorus is anthemic and the passion that comes over in Will’s voice is there for all to hear. I’m certain this is a chorus that will be sung back to the band when they head out on their March headline tour.
The vocal fade out at the end of the track, is a nod to the bands heroes The Stone Roses, with their legendary track This Is The One. It’s extremely clever and not something you see very often and ensures that the band stand out.
Only Just Begun further showcases why Marseille are one of the best bands about. With each release you can hear the confidence growing (not that they were ever short of it in the first place). The variety in their music is their for all to see and yes you can hear their influences, but the band have well and truly added their own style to it. Marseille are on the verge of exploding into the mainstream, it’s time to strap on those seatbelts as it’s going to be one hell of a ride from now on!
Only Just Begun is released on Friday 20th January and can be pre-saved here.
Marseille were recent guests on the ThisIsTheMusic meets podcast which you can listen to here or watch on our You Tube channel here.
