The Kynd return with their first new music in over 20 years!

Having reformed in 2021 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of their debut single Egotripper (Produced by Andy Bell of RIDE/Oasis) with a series of well received live shows, the Bucks based band have delighted fans old and new, with the announcement of a new single (Whispers and Tones set for release on Friday 9th December) and the long-awaited follow up to their debut album (Timelines due for release in March next year).

Having rose to prominence in 1995 and being regulars on the Camden gig scene at Blow Up Metro, The Marquee and holding down a residency at the notorious Dublin Castle and selling out the legendary 100 Club. The Kynd built up a loyal following as a result of their relentless touring. In 1996, the band signed to London based indie label MGR Records, releasing their debut single egotripper which was championed by legendary DJ Gary Crowley and dubbed new indie hopefuls’ by the NME and ’Power Brit Pop!’ by Melody Maker.

The band went on to release their debut album Shakedown to critical acclaim in England, and great commercial success in Japan, before splitting in 2000 ahead of a planned second album.

Whispers and Tones is a guitar driven slice of indie-rock, with a catchy melody, plenty of self belief and high energy.

The guitar riffs are punchy and uplifting and are frankly magnificent and will instantly draw you in, leaving you captivated and wanting more.

The lyrics are about a blind child sitting in church, raging at God for cursing them with sightlessness. The idea to write from a disabled person’s point of view was inspired by Wilfred Owen’s poem “Disabled”. I really wanted to capture the alienation, loneliness, and frustration of being kept apart from others by a disability, but I didn’t want the song to be melancholy, so the up-tempo guitar riffing we used felt like a good fit and certainly captured the anger of the narrator’s situation.”

The vocals on the track are superb, really powerful and melodic and the harmonies on the songs chorus are glorious and blend perfectly well together and adds plenty of emotion to the song.

“Send me a dream, of the world I’ve never seen, walk through unknown, Whispers and Tones”

The keys add great colour and texture and give a feeling of 60s psychedelic with a modern day feel really shine in the songs outro, it reminds me a little bit of The Charlatans at their absolute peak.

The Kynd are back stronger and hungrier than ever and determined to make up for lost time. Whispers and Tones is a quality track, which sets things up nicely for the album, which based on this single release will be immense and will see the band make up for lost time and become a huge hit across the UK and beyond.

Whispers and Tones is released on Friday 9th December, via Rock/Paper/Scissors and is the first single release from the bands forthcoming new album Timelines, which is due for release on the 10th March. You can pre-order it here.

ThisIsTheMusic will be playing the track on Saturday 10th December on the Rise of The Indie Artists show on Away Day Radio.

I’m also delighted to announce that The Kynd will be joining me on the ThisIsTheMusic meets podcast next March to discuss Timelines and much more, so watch this space!!
