Gallaher’s Green are a four piece rocknroll band hailing from Manchester, whose influences range from the 60s up to the present day including Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Manic Street Preachers and many more.
Their new single, Memphis, which is due to be released on Friday 7th October and will raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, was inspired when a close friend and former colleague of singer Jon Olphert, shared his experiences after suffering a serious injury after stepping on Improvised Explosive Device (IED) whilst serving as a military working dog handler with his dog Memphis, in Afghanistan in 2011.
The lyrics of the song detail the former colleague recalling the moment he stepped on the IED, his treatment on the battlefield, to the helicopter rescue where his uniform was ripped off by medics and receiving two injections of morphine. He ultimately had to have his lower leg amputated and in turn was forced to leave the military.
As well as the hard hitting sentiment behind the lyrics, the music also packs a real punch.
Starting off with helicopters, pounding drums, a thumping bass line and radio transmission, you just get the initial feeling that this song is going to a real anthem.
As the song gets going a screaming guitar solo takes over, which gives way to the emotive and heartfelt opening line:
“August 4 2011, the day my world turned upside down”
The emotion in the vocal is evident throughout the track, which works brilliantly with the sentiment behind the song of bravery, loyalty and patriotism. There is also a hint of anger at how the ex-forces veteran was treated, by the army during the injury and subsequent discharge through the lyric:
“Am I no use to you anymore? For 18 years I was your servant, did everything you asked of me, when I broke you cast me at the door”
Throughout the track it is driven by energetic and heavy hitting guitars, pounding drums and basslines, with a vocal full of passion that captures the mood of the song superbly. The blistering guitar solo at the end of the track is stunning and acts as a reminder that Gallahers Green are a top quality band.
What the band are striving to do should be applauded and will raise awareness of what these brave men and women do to protect this country as they truly are heroes.
All profits raised between 7th October and November 11th will be donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund, culminating in a fund raising gig on the 12th November, at Taylor‘s Shure 5 Studios. In addition, profits from the bands teeshirt and CD sales will also be donated.
Memphis is due to be released on Friday 7th September and can be pre-saved here.
If you can’t until Fridays release date, Gallahers Green very kindly allowed ThisIsTheMusic to play it on our Rise of the Indie Artists show. Head to about the 55 minute mark to hear it!
