The 121s release Wired To The Moon

The 121s are a band hailing from Dundee in Scotland with a sound ranging from mod, punk, Indian classical music, rock and roll and everything inbetween.

Consisting of 11 songs and lasting 50 minutes, Wired To The Moon is full of charm and will have you pressing that repeat button for another listen.

Kicking off with title track Wired To The Moon, the song is built around a driving drum beat and echoing bassline, allow the song to build, before hitting the chorus. Nick‘s vocal really shines through. The biggest compliment I can play this song is that it would fit in perfectly with the newer Paul Weller albums.

Holla Hello, has a great guitar riff in the intro, combing that classic British indie guitar sound with a fresh sounding melody.

My Beautiful Mind rumbles along at a fast pace and features harmonica, catchy guitar hooks ( check out the electric guitar solo around the 4 minute mark) and a female backing singing harmonising on the track throughout and really hammers home that the band aren’t prepared to stay in their comfort zone.

Green is very much a song looking towards to the future “the futures bright and green”  and hints at a political message about the governments sustainability targets, with the lyrics having an inspiring and optimistic feel about them. Great guitar riffs throughout

Nature‘s Callings is a great uplifting anthem and features a female backing singer and great guitar riffs.

Fashion! is a real experimental track, with vibrating guitar riffs a has a stomping vibe about it. Lyrically the song looks at how people want to fit in with the latest trends, but not actually liking the trends: the message in the song, do what you want to do!

The Invention of God is full of great guitar riffs, with a brilliant melody and sees Nick tackling taboo subjects ranging from political, religion and sex.

Reloveution In Our Head was my entry point with The 121s. It’s a beautiful song, which you can hear that the band have invested a lot of time in getting this one exactly how they want out. The song features strings, vocal harmonies with the lyrics centring  around the Tory governments monopolisation of our low income and oppressed population. This track (as does Wired To The Moon and Your Eminence) features Paul “Lefty” Wright, who played on the track “Glad Times” from  Paul Weller’s Fat Pop album.

The  drums on Your Eminence, have a trippy psychedelic vibe.  In a society which is obsessed with fitting in and being a someone in power the lyrics have a powerful message in saying it doesn’t matter “your eminence, drives me insane, and I know what I want to say, you’re Revolution ain’t gay or straight“

A New Decade is a song about reflection and looking towards the future.

As the title suggests, With Life There’s Hope, the album finishes with a powerful message of hopefulness, which is the reoccurring theme of the album. The soaring guitar solo, which takes us into the songs outro,  is a wonderful display of musicianship and really emphasises Nick’s ability and quality as a musician.

Wired To The Moon is a brilliant album, full of love, hope and passion,  making it a very special record and one that you simply can’t miss out on.
