MARSEILLE – STATE OF MIND – SINGLE REVIEW

Marseille, are one of the most exciting and most talked about indie rock bands on the scene at the moment and with their latest release State of Mind, it’s easy to see why.

Following hot on the heels of the highly successful singles World‘s Gone Mad and Shout It Out Loud (check out our review here), State of Mind sees the band take a different and exciting direction, that pays homage to the 90s.

Whilst there are many 90s influences on the record such as The Verve and The La’s; the biggest and main influence, in my opinion, is The Stone Roses.

The intro is full of jangly guitars, an iconic guitar riff and big pounding drums, before that instantly recognisable and powerful vocal kicks in. The iconic riff and drums form the backbone of the song, giving the song a real groove.

Lyrically the song is sending a message that no matter life throws at you, or the doubters you encounter, you will always come back stronger.

Frontman Will Brown, says it’s “the best song I’ve (he’s) ever written” and he goes on to explain

“The moment of magic in a guitar shop where I instantly played the iconic riff from the song. It was rejected by my previous band and shortly after I was kicked out. After that I was confused about my feelings about it. I was angry, but also felt free in a way. So I changed the lyrics to explain how I felt, and about the fact that I would inevitably prove them wrong”.

With self-confidence like that, not seen since the days of 2 brothers hailing from Burnage in Manchester, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the country cottons on to what the rest of us already know; Marseille are a band heading straight to the top – strap yourselves in for the ride, it’s going to be nuts from here on out.

Follow Marseille, across their social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Spotify. The bands merchandise and first two singles are available from the online shop.
