The Utopiates are a 5 piece new wave inspired band, formed in north London, in the midst of the global pandemic and national lockdown. Frontman, Dan Popplewell, is the bands creative force and since January 2021 have seen the band release 4 excellent singles (amazing nearly 40k streams on Spotify alone). If that wasn’t enough, the band have also played at the prestigious Shiiine on summer and winter events and are set to tour with indie legends The Pigeon Detectives as well as embarking on their own headline tour.
Anywhere But Here, is The Utopiates debut EP and features 3 songs, all of which have never been heard before.
So what can we expect? Well the bands influences of late 80s era indie is strong; think The Happy Mondays; Primal Scream; The Stone Roses, with synth pop also being an influence.
The title track Anywhere But Here, is the starting point for the resurrection of baggy. The song has a great melody, groove and is full of energy. The song has a great driving piano riff throughout the song and the guitar solo is epic! It could easily have been written by John Squire or from Noel Gallagher in the Oasis Be Here Now era. Despite the uncertain times we live in, the lyrics are full of positivity,
On The Getaway the pace and the mood of the EP drops. The lyrics speak of that familiar pain of loss that’s experienced.
The pace is picked up on the final track, Love Salvation. The song starts off with an acoustic guitar (chord pattern sounds a bit like Oasis’ “It’s Better People”). The song is a perfect closer as it references a mind-bending experience with the one you love on a trip to the English countryside; a love letter to those who those who need to believe in themselves again. The outro features a monumental guitar riff, with thunderous drumming and really showcases a band having the time of their lives in the studio.
This is a great EP, full of groove, swagger, heartfelt lyrics and epic guitar riffs.
Anywhere But Here, is set for release on June 25th.
