Wolverhampton singer, songwriter, Sam Lambethis set to release his debut solo EP Love and Exile, on Friday 28th May , a collection of 7 songs, written by Sam, produced and mixed by Ryan Pinson at RML studios in August 2020.
It is a fantastic record, covering a range of topics and emotions from love, loss trust, friendship, dreams and regrets and showcases Sam’s craftmanship as a musician in writing songs that are full of catchy choruses and full of beautiful melodies.
To build the anticipation and hype around the record, since November 2020, Sam has released 3 of the songs featured on the EP; and due to the place on the track list of the album, take on a new meaning.
So track 1, is the country rock sounding Dog Days Are-A Comin’ Again, which features guitars, harmonica, a mid-song euphoric “woop” and Sam’s growling vocal delivery. The song really showcases Sam’s versatility as a musician, as up until lockdown he had never played harmonica. As regular followers of Sam’s social media accounts will know, he is a big dog-lover and it is therefore fitting that on this triumphant first track of the album, we finish with Sam’s dog, Henry, on barking (sic) vocals.
‘How’d You Find Me’ is a really upbeat and catchy song. It has a memorable chorus, pounding drums, harmonic and even an organ.
With over 51k streams on Spotify since its release in November 2020 the next track is lead single When Love Ain’t Enough. This is a stripped back semi-autobiographical song, which chuggs along with the bass, before a brilliant piano solo, which leads the song into a different direction of hope and optimism.
If you wanted to listen to a great country rock song, then look no further than The King (You and Me)After the opening keyboard and guitar, the song builds into an up-tempo rocky number and features a mandolin and a punchy guitar solo. With its catchy chorus of “Whatever happened, Whatever happened to you and me?”, this is a song that I can see the crowd singing along to.
When I’m With You, brings the pace down and is beautiful ballad, showing his tender side. It has an American country rock vibe, and If Sam was to release this song over in the USA, it would be a roaring success.
“I hope Love & Exile proves to be the start of an exciting and fulfilling musical journey, and I’m humbled and indebted to everybody for their support so far.”
‘The Things You Lose On The Breeze’ is an acoustic guitar and harmonica track, in the style of Bob Dylan. The song is a real thought provoker.
‘The Scenic Route’ is the last track on the album and packs all of the previous songs to a 6 minute odyssey, The song builds with its acoustic and slide guitar, before breaking out with the drums crashing in and the explosion of guitar riffs, piano and harmonies lead us into the outro, where we come full circle and are played out with Sam’s vocal and acoustic guitar; and is a great way in which to finish the EP.
To think that Sam had gone into musical “retirement” up until the first lockdown in 2020 and here we are some 15 months later, with a masterpiece of an EP is something amazing. I have been on Sam’s wonderful resurgent journey, since the very beginning, and I have really enjoyed watching it and having the opportunity to do so.
Since making his comeback, Sam has donated a huge chunk of his proceeds to WWF and has planted 30 trees for One Tree Planed and is in dialogue with music venues to make his gigs more sustainable via reusable cups.
Love and Exile is released on Friday 28th May and is available to buy from Sam’s Bandcamp store. and will include some of Lambeth’s classic material from former bands. Half of the proceeds from the EP will go to WWF. Each cover will be unique and will feature an endangered species with each copy being signed and will come with lyric sheets and a never-before released track.
